Veterinary roles we recruit

Who does your practice
need to hire?

Choose the recruitment service for your vacancy, from a general-practice associate to a specialist or multi-hospital leader.

For Portland veterinary employers

One metro, three counties.
Specific hospital assignments.

A Northwest District emergency role, a Clackamas County surgeon search and a Gresham new-graduate position need different briefs. Start with the hospital address, city, county, clinical resources and schedule, then agree the search with BEGHR.

Associate veterinarians

Specify independent procedures, appointment capacity and doctor overlap. If recruiting a new graduate, name the mentor and protect teaching time; Oregon issues an intern permit to an applicant with less than a year of experience, so say who supervises the first year.

Plan an associate search →

Specialist and emergency appointments

Define the discipline, required credentials, shift pattern and resources already available. Explain referral communication, overnight staffing and inpatient handover, and name the technicians who support the shift.

Scope a specialist role →

Medical and regional leadership

List the hospitals and decision authority. Separate clinical workload from protected time for coaching, clinical standards and team development, and name the Managing Veterinarian Oregon requires at each registered hospital address.

Define a medical director role →

Put the hospital address, city and county in the brief.

Use the actual work address, the city, the county and any additional facilities. Do not present a Gresham or Wilsonville vacancy as interchangeable with a Portland neighborhood hospital. A rotating role should state which days belong to which site and whether movement between sites happens between working days or during a clinical shift.

Keep one clear decision process.

Choose the clinical and operational interviewers, confirm the employer-approved package and identify who can authorize an offer. Use the same role-related criteria for every candidate and give one person responsibility for feedback. Confirm the candidate’s Oregon license status before a start date is set. Review the hiring brief and candidate scorecard before outreach.

Choose the service that matches the vacancy.

This is permanent placement for employers. Your practice hires the selected candidate directly. An immediate relief shift needs a separate arrangement; this service does not promise a locum available today. Job seekers can start with BEGHR’s veterinary placement page; the pricing form here is for employer inquiries.

Portland veterinary hiring context for employers

The Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board states that applicants must pass an open-book Oregon Jurisprudence Exam and Regional Disease Test, with a minimum score of 95 percent on the jurisprudence exam and 100 percent on the disease test. Oregon Administrative Rule 875-010-0090 has veterinarians report 30 hours of continuing education with renewals in odd-numbered years and caps non-scientific subjects such as communication skills and practice management at six hours. Under Oregon Revised Statutes 686.065 the Board may issue a temporary license to an applicant who holds a current license in another state and has practiced for at least one year, and Oregon Administrative Rule 875-010-0031 requires each physical hospital address to register with a designated Managing Veterinarian. Oregon State University’s college of veterinary medicine in Corvallis awards the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and Portland Community College’s Veterinary Technology program says it prepares students to become certified veterinary technicians. O*NET OnLine, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, lists a higher median annual wage in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro area, which includes Washington State, than in Oregon overall or the United States for veterinarians, veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants. The same state rules apply to every Portland employer, so confirm them before the Portland search starts.

  • Continuing education support: Oregon veterinarians report 30 hours in odd-numbered years, with at least one hour each on antibiotic use and on analgesic and anesthetic methods, so state the paid time and course costs the practice covers.
  • Licensing route and start date: the Board requires its jurisprudence and disease tests and license verifications sent directly from other state boards, so confirm current steps with the Board and keep the start date separate from the license date.
  • Managing Veterinarian: each hospital address registers separately with a designated Managing Veterinarian, and a change of ownership ends the registration, so name who holds the role at each address.
  • Technician duties: Oregon licenses certified veterinary technicians and requires their duties to be performed under a veterinarian’s supervision, so list the tasks delegated and who supervises them.
  • Leave terms: the Bureau of Labor and Industries sets paid sick time at ten or more Oregon employees, or six or more for an employer with a location in Portland, so state leave terms in the offer.

Market context is attributed to Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board applications, Oregon Administrative Rule 875-010-0090 on continuing education, Oregon Administrative Rule 875-010-0031 on facility registration, Oregon Administrative Rule 875-030-0040 on technician supervision, Oregon Revised Statutes chapter 686, Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries sick time, Oregon State University DVM program, Portland Community College Veterinary Technology, O*NET OnLine veterinarian wages by area, O*NET OnLine veterinary technician wages by area and O*NET OnLine veterinary assistant wages by area. These are third-party and state sources, not BEGHR claims.

Plan Oregon credential checks before the start date.

Use the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board site and its license lookup link for the relevant professional record. Oregon licenses veterinarians, certified veterinary technicians and certified euthanasia technicians through the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board. Assign a person to verify license status and the expiration date in the Board’s licensee directory, record the verification date and resolve questions with the Board. Check any additional specialty credentials required by the employer with the issuing organization.

For a candidate moving from another state, review the Oregon veterinary licensure application steps. Do not treat an out-of-state license or a preferred start date as confirmation that Oregon requirements are satisfied. Oregon requires applicants to pass its open-book Jurisprudence Exam and Regional Disease Test and to have license verifications sent directly from every board that has licensed them, and each hospital address must be registered with a Managing Veterinarian. The Board determines eligibility and timing; BEGHR does not issue licenses.

Veterinary recruitment coverage

Portland and
surrounding communities.

A Portland veterinary search works best when the hospital address comes before the city label. Portland neighborhoods, cities in Washington and Clackamas counties and the eastern Multnomah County cities are different workplaces under different local governments, and some hospitals carry a Portland mailing line while sitting in another city. Business Executive Group uses the employer’s role, schedule and location to scope a permanent search.

Name the street address, city and county, and keep Portland neighborhoods separate from suburban cities. Several places cross county lines: Portland reaches Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, Lake Oswego reaches all three, and Tualatin, Wilsonville and Milwaukie each reach two. Aloha and Bethany are census designated places, not cities. Coverage on this site is limited to Oregon; a hospital in Washington State, including Vancouver and Camas, falls under a different licensing authority.

City of Portland

Portland is a single city that reaches into Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, and the City recognizes 94 neighborhood associations. Northwest District, Sunderland and Richmond are separate neighborhoods, and Pearl District is a fourth neighborhood next to Northwest District. A Portland mailing line does not prove a hospital is in the city, because the Census geocoder places some Portland-mailed hospital addresses in Gresham, Tigard and Bethany, so give the street address and the neighborhood.

Washington County, west metro

Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin and Forest Grove are incorporated cities, and Aloha and Bethany are census designated places without city governments. Tualatin also reaches into Clackamas County. Washington County Animal Services, based at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter in Hillsboro, licenses dogs only, so name the county as well as the city in each brief.

Clackamas County

Lake Oswego, Happy Valley, Milwaukie, Oregon City, West Linn, Wilsonville and Canby are incorporated cities in Clackamas County. Lake Oswego also reaches into Multnomah and Washington counties, Milwaukie into Multnomah County and Wilsonville into Washington County. Clackamas County Dog Services names Happy Valley, Lake Oswego and Tualatin as exceptions to its dog licensing, so the city and county in the brief decide which rules apply.

East Multnomah County

Gresham and Troutdale are incorporated cities in Multnomah County, served with Portland, Fairview, Wood Village and Maywood Park by Multnomah County Animal Services. Fairview and Wood Village are separate cities and are named in the Gresham and Troutdale briefs rather than given pages of their own. Treat a Gresham hospital as its own search with its own street address, and list any Portland site separately.

Employer questions

Veterinary recruiting questions

Which veterinary positions can Portland employers recruit through BEGHR?

The service covers permanent associate veterinarians, veterinary specialists, emergency DVMs, surgery appointments, medical directors and regional veterinary leaders. Search fit depends on the role, clinical requirements and employer brief. The practice makes the final hiring decision.

Is this for employers hiring veterinarians or for job applications?

This website is for practice owners and employer hiring teams seeking permanent veterinary staff. Its form requests a hiring brief and returns a placement estimate after employer opt-in. It is not an open-jobs directory or a candidate application form.

How does milestone billing work?

Agree the role, estimated fee range, billable milestones and payment terms before the search begins. Recruiting uses an hourly, pay-as-you-go model within the agreed range. BEGHR’s published placement process starts billing after applicants are sent. Invoices follow the agreed cadence, at least monthly during billable service delivery. BEGHR handles client billing and account questions.

Do we pay if a search does not result in a hire?

Milestone billing pays for agreed work as the search progresses, so completed billable milestones may still be payable without a placement. Your client agreement specifies the billing triggers, amounts, due dates and any cancellation terms.

Where can we see our placement price?

Select your role, complete the hiring questions and submit your employer contact details through the pricing form to receive an estimated fee range. BEGHR confirms the role classification, final fee and payment milestones before you engage the service.

How long does placement take?

BEGHR’s placement timeframe is 23–55 days. Timing depends on the role, candidate availability and the employer’s hiring process.

How does BEGHR pricing compare with contingency recruiting?

BEGHR offers placement at typically 50% less than contingency recruiting and 50% off second and subsequent hires for the same role. Use the pricing form for an estimate and confirm your fee and repeat-hire eligibility before starting.

What fill rate does BEGHR report?

BEGHR reports 86% fill rate on active searches across its placement service. This provider-wide figure is not a city-specific or veterinary-only result and does not guarantee an individual hiring outcome.

Who receives my employer inquiry?

Business Executive Group receives your contact information, selected roles, qualification answers, placement estimate and the originating website and page through its existing BEGHR lead intake. This is an employer inquiry, not a candidate job application.

How are placement fees confirmed?

The instant-pricing form uses BEGHR’s role categories and current retail ranges to show an estimate after you submit your employer details. The provider confirms the actual category, scope, payment milestones and commercial terms before a search engagement begins.
